Getting Started With The Blue Angel

Welcome to the Blue Angel Getting Started Page

Objectives:

  1. To guide the user through the process of changing and/or updating their device's ROM
  2. A walk-through of how to change your Language on your device
  3. A walk-through of how to updating your device to the latest available ROM version (based on the XDA-Tools that are available at this time)

The offical forums for Wiki are:

To post questions or ask for help Wiki: Help me! And Yes I have read Getting Started

To Post comments / suggestions / clarifications about the Wiki site Wiki Blueangel Development

The following How-To's are based on a T-Mobile MDAIII Device that was shipped in Germany and the user wishes to change this to English as well as to upgrade his Radio ROM to the highest available version.

You should be able to adapt this to your own needs.

It is expected that you read through the following four steps these topics will not be covered again in such detail in the rest of Wiki.

If you don't like what you read, don't panic, fix it. This is your site.

Please note that the xda3nbftool used in this How To is always under development. New ROM releases have incorporated a new Password syntax that the current xda3nbftool does not support. If you are working on a new ROM and can't get the passwords to work, try searching the forum.

How do I find out what my device configuration is before upgrading?

Understanding what I need to find

In order to change your ROM to a higher or different language version you need the following information:

  1. What is my Model Number?
  2. What is the Language Code of my Shipped ROM?
  3. What is the Operator Code of my Device?
  4. What ROM version do I have now?
  5. What ExtendedRom do I have now?
  6. What is my current Radio ROM version?

How to find all of this information in one place.

  1. Insure that your device is connected to your Desktop using ActiveSync
  2. Download GetDeviceData.exe to your desktop
  3. Copy GetDeviceData.exe from your desktop to your device to the following location:
    \Windows\Start Menu\Programs\XDA-Tools\GetDeviceData.exe
  4. Run GetDeviceData.exe on your device
Do not expect to see anything apart from the Icon turning blue.
It will create a file called DeviceData.txt in the \windows dir
Warning This is a 3k file and if opened on your device it will truncate after the first word.
The file has blanks and unprintable characters in it.
If you open it with notepad you might not see the whole content but notice the scroll bar at bottom.
  5. From you desktop, connect to your device via your file explorer to find
    \Windows\DeviceData.txt
sort by date it will be the first or last
  6. Copy this to your desktop
  7. Open DeviceData.txt with Notepad
  8. Edit out the double blanks as well as unprintable characters.
Tip For large areas: Move to the end of the last letter, add a blank,
Holding down the Ctrl & Shift Press the ->, (This highlights to the right of next word)
Still Holding down the Ctrl & Shift Press the <- (This highlights to the left of next word)
now hit Del to delete the highlight.

Understanding the DeviceData.txt

My current DeviceData reads: PH20B 0 B GER R T-MOB101 1.12.00 0 0 1.12.100 1.02.00 02.00

    • Model No: PH2OB
    • Minor version Model No: O B
    • Language Code: GER (German) This is the also MY shipped Language Code)
    • Minor: R
    • Operator code: T-MOB101
    • This is the code of how your device was sold as, not what SIM you are using.
    • ROM Version: 1.12.00
    • Minor: 0 0
    • Extended ROM version: 1.12.100
    • Radio Version 1.02.00
    • Minor: 02.00

Warning This is the status that you have at the moment. If you have performed an upgrade this does not reflect the shipped status For upgrades you MUST know what your shipped Language code was

How do I find this information on my device?

All of this info apart from the Operator code can be seen in "Device Information" Menu:Start > Settings > TAB:System > Icon:Device Information > TAB:Identity >TAB:Hardware The Shipped Language code only you know.

How do I find the correct upgrade ROM that will work for me?

Based on the fact that: My current Device data reads: PH20B 0 B GER R T-MOB101 1.12.00 0 0 1.12.100 1.02.00 02.00 Notepad C:\XDA-Tools\DeviceData.txt I want to upgrade my Rom to the highest current avliable version in WWE (World Wide English)

  • I should be looking for a rom version that is higher then 1.12.00
  • I should be looking for a radio version higher that 1.02.00
  • I want to change the language from GER to WWE (World Wide English)

In a perfect world my operator T-M0B101 (T-Mobile Germany) would offer me an upgrade on their web site. However as this is not a perfect world and thus you have landed at XDA-Developers.

Steps I need to take

  1. Go to "List of know Blueangel, sold as, Model ID, Operator code etc"
  2. In the first Post I search for my Operator
    "T-Mobile - Germany - In German (GER) 1.22.01 118 1.06.00"
The Post gives me information about my own device
Check out the official web site. Read what has worked in the past.
If you are lucky then the same person that has your phone will tell you what worked for him.
Remember This is an HowTo! so for now we will have to assume that:
The only version around is the offical (GER) 1.22.01 118 1.06.00 and NO WWE version.
  3. Go back to "List of know Blueangel, sold as, Model ID, Operator code etc"

Now search for a WWE that best fits your needs. In this case its: Qtek - Sweden - In English (WWE) 1.22.00 169 1.06.02

It reports: Last know Official update: as Complete Updates/BA_WWE_BP_12200_126_10600_SHIP/BA_WWE_BP_12200_126_10600_SHIP.exe BA_WWE_BP_12200_169_10602_SHIP.exe

Don't download it before you have done some research in it. As we know I have a German T-Mobile (T-M0B101) Which was shipped as GER. The upgrade might not work for me for I don't have a Qtek (BRIGH001) WWE from Sweden.

Understanding the file name convention of upgrades.

There is no golden rule for this, however there are a few things that you can tell be the file name This one says that it is for BA (BlueAngle?), in WWE, Rom Version is 1.22.00, Extended ROM 1.22.169 and Radio 1.06.02.

  1. Go to the forum and search for a thread about this ROM.
Search for "169", pick the forum "Blue Angel upgrading etc."
BTW: I used 169 since I know that there are many 1.22.00 and 1.06.02 around.
    Search found: New ROM 1.22.169WWE
    REF http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=79215#79215
  2. Read the thread , Will it work for me? Seems not based on post
    Cane Reports:
    "Also wrong password."
    http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=79310#79310
    Further down ArtZ Writes
"Finally, I decided to use PDA2k_WWE_12200_162_10600_SHIP.exe and replace the original radio_nbf file (10600) with the radio _.nbf file from BA_FRE_BP_12202_558_10602_SHIP.exe"
    http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=79345#79345
So we have 1.22.00 with radio 1.06.00 which seems to work with the know tools.
Yes I know you want the 1.06.02, cooking your own roms will be covered later.
We will stay with the suggestion of PDA2k_WWE_12200_162_10600_SHIP.exe
    let's go find it.
  3. Go back to "List of know Blueangel, sold as, Model ID, Operator code etc"
    http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=81244#81244
PDA2k is the name of the I-Mate device, which I am sure you have worked out by now.
    I-Mate - UK? - In English (WWE) 1.22.00 162 1.06.00
    http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=81811#81811
  4. Again you need to check the forum out. Will it work for me? what do we know

Just knowing that an update worked is great, but you also need to know how. Do a search for "'162" pick the forum "Blue Angel upgrading etc." and read the thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=77340#77340 Seems to be ok and a whole lot of stuff you might not understand YET!

I have now found my new WWE ROM for my German (GER) T-Mobile (T-M0B101) and am ready to upgrade it. I know that this will work for I have checked the forum. My New Rom is: PDA2k_WWE_12200_162_10600_SHIP.exe

How do I install an upgrade and what tools to use?

As we know I have a german (GER) T-Mobile (T-M0B101) The upgrade I have chosen "PDA2k_WWE_12200_162_10600_SHIP.exe" is made by I-Mate.

My current Device data reads: PH20B 0 B GER R T-MOB101 1.12.00 0 0 1.12.100 1.02.00 02.00 Notepad C:\XDA-Tools\DeviceData.txt

Let us first set up a work area for XDA-Developers and everything that will follow.

For this we need create C:\XDA-Tools in a dos window MD C:\XDA-Tools

Steps I need to take

  1. Download the upgrade
Now if I had a I-Mate PDA2k which was shipped in WWE
I would just run the Upgrade and read what it tells me (Step 7)
and I would not be in Wiki would I? However:
Since I am doing a Not the same Carrier and/or Language Upgrade I also need to:
  2. Convert the download file into a useable from
  3. Download the necessary tools from XDA-Developers
  4. Edit the EditFix.bat to my Shipped devices settings
  5. Have a Password for the ROM
  6. Fix the issue of irregular Shipped devices settings.
    Before I can
  7. Run the Upgrade

Note : Because of historical reason you can read it. But there is a utility MpgradeUt_noid.exe we are using for flashing without the need of changing so Operator code etc.

Detailed steps I need to take

  1. Download the upgrade
Which we know was found on:
"List of know Blueangel, sold as, Model ID, Operator code etc"
    http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=81244#81244
    http://www.clubimate.com/Support/PDA2k_WWE_12200_162_10600_SHIP.exe
    Download to
    C:\XDA-Tools\PDA2k_WWE_12200_162_10600_SHIP.exe
  2. Convert the download file into a useable from
The file that I have downloaded
    PDA2k_WWE_12200_162_10600_SHIP.exe
would work if your device was from I-mate In WWE.
As this is not the case you need to extract the content with rar or zip.
in C:\XDA-Tools highlight the file, right mouse click "Extract to PDA2k_WWE_12200_162_10600_SHIP.exe\"
The following files can be found in:
    C:\XDA-Tools\PDA2k_WWE_12200_162_10600_SHIP\:
    *BaUpgradeUt.exe = The Upgrade Program
*EnterBL.exe = Puts the device into the Bootloader Program
*GetDeviceData.exe = If run on the device it will generate \windows\DeviceData.txt
    *HTCRUU.conf =Config file used by BaUpgradeUt.exe
    *HTCRUU.dll = used by BaUpgradeUt.exe (I think)
    *ms_.nbf = Extended ROM
    *nk.nbf = OS ROM
    *radio_.nbf = Radio ROM
  3. Download the necessary tools from XDA-Developers
    Download UpgradeTools.rar
    Extract them to
    C:\XDA-Tools\PDA2k_WWE_12200_162_10600_SHIP
The following files can be found in:
    C:\XDA-Tools\PDA2k_WWE_12200_162_10600_SHIP\UpgradeTools.rar:
    * EditFix.bat
The fix.bat that needs to be edited with your device info
    * xda3nbftool.exe
The tool that unlocks the roms with the password.
  4. Edit the EditFix.bat to my Shipped devices settings This one can be skipped using MaUpgradeUt
    Notepad C:\XDA-Tools\PDA2k_WWE_12200_162_10600_SHIP\EditFix.bat
The following Text can be found in:
    C:\XDA-Tools\PDA2k_WWE_12200_162_10600_SHIP\EditFix.bat:

REM 'sd' stands for device, e.g. PH20B.

How to perform a Radio ROM upgrade only?

The Radio ROM is Language independent. This means that you are able to use a French, Italian, German Radio ROM on your device if and only if:

  • You are aware that it was built for your moble number
  • You are aware that it has worked with the XDA-Tools
  • You are aware of a password if it is needed
  • You are aware that the BaUpgradeUt.exe expects to see the Radio ROM it was shipped with.

What I am saying here is that there are also 2 non SIM based devices around and that could have very different Radio ROMs in them, same could be also true for the device shipped in other countries. Not all ship.exe files are the same but they are made to perform with specific versions of nbf's files.

So far my understanding is that the versions 1.02.00, 1.06.00, 1.06.02 and 1.10.00 are of the same family.

As we know I have a german ('GER) T-Mobile (T-M0B101) I have upgraded it by using "PDA2k_WWE_12200_162_10600_SHIP.exe" which is made by I-Mate. My current Devicedata reads: PH20B 0 B WWE E T-MOB101 1.22.00 2 2 1.22.162 1.06.00 06.00

I want to upgrade my Radio ROM to the highest current available version of 1.10.00

Steps I need to take

  1. Find the Ship file of the Radio ROM that I need, or find the latest version that will work for me
  2. Download the upgrade
  3. Convert the upgrade into a useable from
  4. Copy the Radio ROM to my working environment
  5. Run the Upgrade

Detailed Steps I need to take

  1. Find the Ship file of the radio rom that I need
Go to How to Upgrade to the latest Radio ROM Version
This is version 1.10.00 at time of writing
    Download this file to
    C:\XDA-Tools\
The following files should now in your Radioupgrade folder:
    C:\XDA-Tools\Radioupgrade\:
    * BaUpgradeUt.exe
    * EnterBL.exe
    * GetDeviceData.exe
    * HTCRUU.conf
    * HTCRUU.dll
    * radio_.nbf (the latest version you want)
  2. Run the upgrade
NOTE: Make sure you have a backup of all your files on your device, as you will lose all this data after the upgrade is complete
    1. Soft Reset your device first
    2. Place your device the cradle
    3. Make sure that you have power attached
    4. Make sure that ActiveSync is on
    5. Double-click BaUpgradeUt.exe on your PC to start the upgrade

Follow the instructions on the screen. You should see that the BaUpgradeUt.exe has found your current version 1.22.00 1.22.162 1.06.00 And that it will now replace the Radio ROM with version 1.10.00

Do the Hard Reset at the end and don't forget to get yourself a new copy of DeviceData.txt.

Which should read like this PH20B 0 B WWE E T-MOB101 1.22.00 2 2 1.22.162 1.10.00 10.00

If you get a Device ID error with the above:

  1. Find and download the SHIP ROM version that matches your current ROM version here: SHIP ROM Versions
  2. Unpack the file and place it on your desktop
  3. Copy the above radio_.nbf to this folder (replacing the 'old' radio_.nbf)
  4. Del the other 2 nbf's (ms_.nbf and nk_.nbf)
  5. Double-click BaUpgradeUt.exe
  6. Follow the instructions on your screen

If you get one of the following errors with the above:

  • Country ID error This one can be skipped using MaUpgradeUt
  • Language ID error This one can be skipped using MaUpgradeUt
  • Operator ID error This one can be skipped using MaUpgradeUt
  • Grey screen, nothing happens
