How to make your own PersonalSettings.CAB file

Objective:

This is a step-by-step guide on how to make your own personal settings cab file that you can add to your own cooked Extended ROM, so you do not have to go through all the settings again after a hard reset.

Why do I need this?

Well, you don't, really. But I think it is handy to include a .cab file in your Extended ROM that has all your personal settings, so you do not have to go through all the settings manually after a hard reset.

What settings are included in this How-To?

You can add all the settings you want, if you know where to look in the register of your Blueangel. I will include the following personalized settings in this How-To:

  • Regional Settings: Country, timeformat, etc.
  • Telco Settings: SMS, MMS, and others.
  • Custom System Tweaks.

More settings and tweaks can be found here: Registry Tweaks

Tools needed

  • A tool to extract Registry Keys from your registry. I personally prefer Resco Explorer 2003
    • Download a trial version Here
  • A tool to make .cab files, such as WinCE CAB Manager. This is a free tool.

Getting Started

OK, now that we have the tools we need, let's get started.

  • Warning: Your PersonalSettings.CAB will only work for your current ROM version. If you later upgrade to a new ROM, the settings in your cab may not work anymore!

There are two ways to go about this...the easy method and the advanced method.

A. Easy Method

  1. Hard reset your device. This will give you a "clean" registry with no personal settings.
  2. Export your whole registry. You can do this remotely (from your desktop) by using Pocket Controller, or by installing Resco Explorer to your PDA.
  3. Now go through the process of "customizing" your PDA, setting things such as regional settings, owner, telco MMS and SMS settings, etc.
  4. When done, export the whole registry again.
  5. Compare both files using a program like UltraEdit or CompareIt!. The differences between the two files contain your personal settings..! So save the differences to a file called PersonalSettings.reg.
  6. Additionally, you can add of course reg keys from this list to your .reg file: Registry Tweaks You can open the .reg file in Notepad or UltraEdit to edit the file.
  7. Using WinCE CAB Manager, you can now easily make your own PersonalSettings.CAB file.
  8. Add this cab file to your Extended ROM and you are done. For more info on how to do this, see Extended ROM cooking

B. Advanced Method

If you do not want to hard reset your device, you can extract the keys from the registry that you want to include in your PersonalSettings.cab file.

  • NOTE: Make a complete backup of your registry before doing this
  1. Select the settings and tweaks you want to be automatically set after a hard reset. See the list of all Registry Tweaks
  2. Extract the keys from your registry using Resco Explorer or Pocket Controller software
  3. Open each .reg file using Notepad or UltraEdit, and save all the keys in one .reg file by copy-paste
  4. Using WinCE CAB Manager, you can now easily make your own Personal Settings CAB file
  5. Keep the registry file on your computer for later tweaking and editing or adding new keys
  6. Add this cab file to your Extended ROM and you are done. For more info on how to do this, see Extended ROM cooking

That's all folks, hope this helps!
